If Growth Hacking Was a Road Trip, This Would Be It 🚗
Let’s set the scene: one marketing strategist (me) with only three days to plan a whirlwind journey across the United States, hopping from one tech hub to another like Mario collecting power-ups. This trip, which ended up lasting nearly a month, was filled with last-minute adjustments, chaotic flight schedules, and plenty of surprises along the way. It felt a lot like working in a startup where “pivot” becomes a daily mantra.
But, as they say, “fortune favors the bold,” so off I went. Along the way, I found myself visiting seven U.S. cities (and Panama, but we’ll get to that), navigating everything from hurricanes to BBQ-fueled brainstorming sessions. Here’s what each stop taught me about startups, marketing, and surviving in the fast lane.
Pre-Level: Panama – The Out-of-Nowhere Surprise 🌴
Let’s be real: Panama wasn’t originally on the map. It was a pit stop that popped up, kind of like one of those hidden levels you accidentally stumble upon in a video game. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it turned out to be a delightful bonus round!
Lesson: Embrace the unexpected. Panama reminded me that some of the best insights come from unplanned detours. Much like in the startup world, sometimes a curveball is the best thing that can happen to your journey.
Level 1: Miami – The Sunshine State’s Big Storm 🌴🌧️
Ah, Miami. Known for its beaches, parties, and tropical vibes. But instead of sun-soaked days, I landed right in the middle of a hurricane warning. Coming from Argentina, I was definitely not prepared for this! While dodging the storm, I still managed to connect with a few founders who, much like me, were braving their own storms in the business world.
The land of sunshine, Cuban coffee, and the most ambitious tech hustlers I’ve met. Miami’s startup scene (once it’s calmed) feels like a tropical cocktail – a blend of creativity, energy, and slightly chaotic ambition. It’s like a hackathon in a beach resort.
Lesson: Hurricanes (literal and figurative) are bound to hit when you least expect it. The key is to stay grounded, keep hustling, and remind yourself that resilience is part of the growth process.
Level 2: Austin – The Quest for BBQ and Tech Gold 🐂
Austin, where tech meets tacos. This city was like a classic RPG side quest: delicious rewards (BBQ for days) and a thriving startup scene. I attended a few places, met some inspiring innovators, and left with a sense that Austin’s tech culture is as bold as its Ale. One thing I was not counting is the warm of the people, really interesting how welcoming it felt and definitely different from the strong accent and countryside stereotype I was expecting, nothing like it, this city as they told me it’s all about tech and government.
Lesson: Austin taught me the value of combining creativity with grit. Just like BBQ, good marketing takes time, patience, and a little bit of spice to stand out.
Level 3: Los Angeles – The Hollywood Hustle 🎬
LA is the city of dreams, where ambition meets glamour. Here, I attended a few meetings and rubbed elbows with some industry giants in the little time I had during a stopover. I learned that, much like in Hollywood, storytelling in marketing is everything. People want to be captivated by your journey, not just your product. I started to feel the difference between the East Coast to the South to the West Coast, it was the same country, but different people, different mindsets and cultures.
Lesson: Tell a story worth listening to. Your brand narrative is the script, and you’re the director. Make sure it’s memorable.
Level 4: San Francisco – Finding Balance Amidst the Chaos 🌁
San Francisco, where tech and culture collide. Walking through this city was a reminder that there’s life beyond laptops and KPIs. I met founders who were passionate about making a difference, not just a profit, and it was refreshing to see that balance. The culture was so welcoming and I fell in love with the bay atmosphere.
Lesson: Remember to stay grounded. Growth is important, but so is the mission. San Francisco reminded me that innovation should always be in service of something bigger.
Level 5: Silicon Valley – The Boss Level of Tech and Innovation 🕹️
Silicon Valley was the ultimate “boss level” of my journey. I got to see where tech legends are made, meet with brilliant engineers, and immerse myself in the cutting-edge world of AI and Robotics. It’s the place where everyone is thinking a hundred steps ahead, trying to shape the future, as an Argentinean, this was my “Mundial” and I had to play the game at my best, but the funny thing was it actually felt like I was gaming, I made friends, met incredibly talented people and none of them made me feel like a newcomer or an outsider, especially since I was among the very few professionals without an engineer or scientific degree, and this actually turned in my favor as they were more open to listen to what I have to say about their products while providing a different perspective.
Lesson: In Silicon Valley, I was reminded that growth is a never-ending journey. No matter how successful you are, there’s always another level to reach. The startup game doesn’t have a “final boss”—it’s continuous improvement.
Level 6: Las Vegas – Rolling the Dice on Big Ideas 🎲
Vegas, baby! A city that never sleeps (no seriously, I landed at 12 am and left at 6 am and that was more than enough to have an amazing time), and a place where big risks come with big rewards. It was a fitting end to my journey, attending an online tech summit amidst the neon lights and casino hustle (literally) and then hitting the road across Las Vegas Boulevard to have a great time between all the well-known casinos. Vegas taught me that sometimes, you have to take a chance on a wild idea and go all in.
Lesson: Don’t be afraid to bet on yourself. In marketing—and in life—calculated risks often lead to the greatest rewards. Sometimes you’ve got to roll the dice and believe in your vision.
Level 7: Florida Keys – The Bonus Level of Relaxation 🌞🐠
Finally, I capped off my journey with a quick trip to the Florida Keys. After nearly a month of back-to-back cities, presentations, and pitches, I took a breather. It was a “bonus level” to recharge, reflect, and appreciate the journey. Even in the grind of entrepreneurship, taking a moment to relax is essential.
Lesson: Don’t forget to rest! Just like in gaming, a little “cool down” period is essential. After all, you can’t tackle the next level if you’re running on empty.
Final Takeaway: Growth is an Adventure 🎮
This journey taught me that growth—whether personal or professional—is like a never-ending game. There are detours, unexpected storms, boss levels, and even bonus rounds. But each level brings new insights, skills, and experiences that help you level up.
So here’s to all the startups out there, hustling through their own journeys, navigating challenges, and making magic happen. May your “pilgrimage” be as adventurous and rewarding as mine. Keep pushing forward, keep leveling up, and remember: the only way to lose is to stop playing.

If you see a pin on Google Maps with a mad hat icon, that’s probably me.
